Armenia and India’s relationship started long back since the time of Alexander Invasion. Armenians were part of Guides in his team means they had relations with India much before Alexander.
This continued till Medival era there is a Supposed theory Thomas of Cana was of Armenian origin.
Armenian traders were frequented in both land and sea trade to India and had presence in India.
In Medival era with Turkish Invasion of their homeland many Armenians left there and visited Iran/Persia from Persia they moved to different parts of India.
They joined the service of many kings as metal workers and merchants that proved tough competition for East India companies.
In 1688 British East India company signed deal with Armenians as Armenia Nation and company thus leading them to Cities like Kolkata/ Calcutta and Chennai/Madras.
Armenian street in Madras/ Chennai and Kolkata/ Calcutta along with their churches and settlements became prominent near then British Fort Areas.
They served in British India as doctors,lawyers, Engineers and different positions. Joseph David Beglar the Archaeologist. Frederick Joseph Satur and Marie Catchatoor famous doctors along with many professionals existed in India.
The first news paper in Armenian Language was printed and Published in Chennai named Azdarar in 1794.
Thus Armenians lived as part of India till breakup of Soviet Union. After Independence of Armenia when called back to their Nation most of the Armenians left India till recent past and still few Armenians remain in India. Their philanthropic college, Churches and seminaries remain in India.
They as the nation support Kashmir as integral part of India.
Thus let’s remember the community that lived with us in Past and Support us even today.
