Tribute to Dhyanchand the wizard of Hockey Major Dhyan Chand was born on 29 August 1905 at Prayagraj. His father was employed in the British Indian Army thus his family moved to different places and finally settled in Jhansi.
He started his education in Jhansi and later studied at Aligarh and finally moved to Maharani Lakshmi Bai college aka then Victoria College Gwalior.
In 1922 he was enlisted in Army in Punjab Regiment as Sepoy where he played Hockey for the Army and was finally permitted to represent the Army team in Hockey league.
Later with Hockey added to Olympic Dhyan Chand played for United Provinces and finally selected for the national team. Thus team visited Amsterdam and won its First Gold.
Later he was posted to NWFP as a part of deployment still got selected in 1932 olympic squad where by team went to Los Angeles where India defeated USA for 24-1 the unbroken record till 2003. His team later played 37 international tournament where they won 34 and 2 games got draw and one abandoned.
In 1934 he played tournament for national team and winning almost all of them and in 1936 he was made captain of team. Thus under his captainship team won Gold in 1936 by defeating Germany in finals 8-1.
Later his team played many leagues till WW2. In 1947 he retired from professional Hockey and He later retired from the Army in 1956 and was awarded with Padma Bhushan. Later he took up coaching assignment and retiring at 1969 and he passed away in 1979 December 3rd was cremated in Jhansi Heroes Stadium and was given full military honours.
He is being called as wizard of Hockey.His younger brother Roop Singh was in Olympic squad of 1932 and 1936. In Jhansi at Sipri Hill his statue was built. India’s Highest sports award Khel Ratna was officially named as Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award.-Tribute by Srikaanth Sridhar
