Tribute to Shri Ashutosh Mukherjee on his Birth Anniversary.
Shri Ashutosh Mukherjee was born in Kolkata today’s West Bengal his father was a doctor and his grandfather was a Scholar in Nyaya Siddhanta.
His father had him enrolled in School after his Schooling he joined Presidency College in Kolkata where he completed BA with top Rank also completed MA with full Premchand Roychand scholarship. Thus he completed MA in Mathematics and Natural sciences thus first in University of Calcutta to be awarded with Dual degree. In 1886 He married Jogmaya Devi and had 4 children including Syama Prasad Mukherjee ji.
He later studies law and began practicing law in 1888. He was appointed as judge later. He became member of University Fellow.
During his tenure as University Vice Chancellor he built more colleges within University also he wanted to build a world class research from University of Calcutta.
He himself was founder of Calcutta Mathematics society also member of many mathematical and Astronomical society around the world. He was amongst the chair speaker on Inaugural meeting of Indian Science Congress in 1914.
He established Raja bazar college aka University College of Kolkata where Sir C V Raman did research on his Raman Effect and Won Nobel Prize first for Science from Asia.
Bengal technical institute, Ashutosh College and many institutions were established by him. Here many Bengali stalwarts like Taraknath Palit, Rabindranath Tagore and others supported him.
He bought scholars from different parts of National and world to do research and to teach the students. Sir CV Raman,R C Majumdar,Sir Jagdish Chandra Bose, S P Agarkar,PC Ray and many scholars were bought to do research and teach the students. He infact supported Syama Sastri of Mysore Princely State for his discovery and Translation of Arthashastra thus Syama Sastri named his home Ashutosh in his honour.
His tenure as lawyer and Justice for Calcutta High Court was appreciated by many jurists and Judges.
Later he resigned from Judge posting to practice law and breathed last in Patna during a case trial.
He gave his collection of Books to National Library.He was fondly remembered as Tiger of Bengal.
Thus let’s remember the Scholar,Jurist, Educationist and institutions builder.
